Understanding Myopia

Myopia, also known as short-sightedness, is a common vision condition that causes distant objects to appear blurred. It occurs when the eye is too long or focuses light in front of the retina.

Myopia can develop during childhood and may continue to progress. Higher levels of myopia can increase the risk of retinal and other eye complications. Causes of Myopia

The exact cause of myopia is not fully understood, but genetic and environmental factors can contribute. Children with one or both myopic parents are more likely to develop myopia. Spending less time outdoors and prolonged near work may also increase the risk of developing myopia.

Symptoms of Myopia

The main symptom of myopia is blurred distance vision. Children may have difficulty seeing the whiteboard at school, while adults may find it difficult to see distant signs or objects clearly.

Types of Myopia

Childhood Myopia

Myopia that develops during childhood is often associated with elongation of the eyeball. When myopia continues to worsen over time, it is known as progressive myopia.

Pathologic Myopia

Pathological myopia is a severe form of myopia associated with structural changes in the eye that can lead to significant visual impairment.

High Myopia

High myopia is generally defined as -6.00 dioptres or more and is associated with a higher risk of retinal and other eye complications.

Index Myopia

Index myopia occurs when changes in the eye's refractive power cause increasing short-sightedness. It may occur in adults with certain types of cataract.

Risks of High Myopia

High myopia can increase the risk of complications such as retinal tears, retinal detachment, myopic macular changes, and glaucoma. These risks are associated with structural changes in highly myopic eyes.

Refractive procedures such as LASIK correct the refractive error but do not reverse these underlying structural changes. Regular eye examinations are important for people with high myopia.

Myopia Control in Children

For children with progressive myopia, treatments such as low-dose atropine eye drops and specially designed contact lenses may help slow myopia progression in suitable cases.

Early diagnosis, appropriate intervention, and regular monitoring are important for managing childhood myopia.

Myopia Treatment for Adults

For adults who want to reduce their dependence on glasses or contact lenses, vision correction options may include LASIK or implantable contact lenses (ICL), depending on their eye health and suitability.

For older adults with cataracts, cataract surgery with an appropriate intraocular lens may also correct pre-existing refractive errors.

These procedures correct the refractive error but do not reverse the structural changes associated with high myopia. Regular eye examinations remain important even after vision correction.

ICL implanted in the eye can correct refractive errors like myopia & astigmatism.
