Besides her commitment to being at the cutting edge of vitreo-retinal and cataract surgeries and medical retina therapies, Dr Nikolle Tan also finds time to help the less fortunate. She has participated in numerous eye camps in Myanmar, Bangladesh, China, and Nepal, during which she performed cataract operations free of charge.
She is also trained in low-cost manual small incision cataract surgery, a technique very useful in rural areas where resources and facilities are limited. In fact, Dr Nikolle Tan is an instructor in masterclasses on this surgical technique at the annual meeting of the Asia-Pacific Association of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons.
Dr Nikolle Tan was a visiting consultant and lecturer with Lifeline Express, a charity organization that provides eye surgery services to patients in remote parts of China as well as training of doctors in these neglected areas.
In Dingxi (Gansu, China) she visited the Dingxi No.2 People’s Hospital where she delivered lectures on “Small incision cataract surgery”, “Practical points on the interpretation of OCT scans” and “Treatment of endophthalmitis”.
In addition, she saw local patients and gave advice to the local doctors on the treatment of complex cases. She also supervised the local doctors in cataract surgeries.
Dr Nikolle Tan was invited to deliver lectures at The Second Hospital of Lanzhou University in Gansu, China. She spoke on “Practical points on the interpretation of OCT scans” and “Updates on diabetic macular edema”.
